About the Rational Theologian

Hi. My name is Pierre Gilbert, Associate Emeritus Professor of Bible and Theology at Canadian Mennonite University (Winnipeg, MB).

The purpose of this website is twofold.

First, it is intended to provide a convenient placeholder for some of the articles I have written over the years. These articles address a variety of biblical and theological issues ranging from biblical theology, the problem of evil, mission, faith and society, and spiritual warfare. While the topics may seem somewhat eclectic, they have two important elements in common: 1) they all focus on exegesis and biblical theology; 2) they seek to relate the biblical text to a contemporary concern.

Second, this website is intended to provide a variety of resources to leaders and laypeople. My goal is to post material that addresses some of the current cultural issues that are impacting our society and the church.

The title of this website is very intentional. Theology and reason are not contradictory. As the prominent social commentator, Dennis Prager, demonstrates in his popular series on the Torah, The Rational Bible, one doesn’t have to put the mind in neutral when reading the Bible or doing theology. The popular impression that Christianity derides reason is simply false.

The Judeo-Christian tradition privileges the heart and the mind in a way that seamlessly and powerfully integrates both. The God of the Bible reveals himself as a God of love and reason, who has created human beings with the capacity for both. It is, in fact, when men and women most fully give expression to the heart and the mind that they function best.
